Anjou - crystal clear waters and fine food
and drink
Less well
known than its neighbours of Brittany and the Loire Valley,
the hidden charms of Anjou can be discovered by cruising along
its gently flowing rivers.
Cruise
through a rolling countryside dotted with famous chateaux,
abbeys, and manor houses. Anjou
is the ideal place to relax as you cruise slowly through the
flower decked locks and lakes of water lilies.
Visit
the famous city of Angers with its cathedral and magnificent
fortress of seventeen towers. Just
north of the city, the rivers Mayenne and Sarthe join to form
the Maine, in the heart of the Loire country.
The
Mayenne is a delightful river to cruise, with only 25 locks
as it meanders through unspoiled countryside past the ancient
castle of Laval to the feudal citadel of Mayenne. Chateau-Gontier
has retained its old half-timbered mansions.
Off
the Mayenne, Segre is reached along the rural Oudon. The Sarthe
also provides pleasurable boating, wending its way past lovely
small towns such as Solesmes with its famous Gregorian Abbey.
There
are plenty of mooring places, often close to excellent restaurants
renowned for the regions fine food such as perch in
a light butter sauce, Port Salut cheese, cider and pear wine,
and Anjou's own wines - no less than 28 appelations controlees.
